UMANG App | FAT-Based – UAN Generation & Activation Summary

EPFO has mandated Aadhaar-based Face Authentication Technology (FAT) for 100% digital UAN generation and activation through the UMANG App, eliminating employer-led UAN creation.

Note: Step by Step process attached - as PDF in this article

Key Highlights

  • UAN generation and activation are combined into a single FAT process — no separate activation step required.
  • Employer-created UANs are discontinued; Aadhaar is the sole source of identity verification.
  • New employees must generate and activate their UAN themselves before submitting joining documents.
  • Employee demographic details (Name, DOB, Gender) are auto-fetched from Aadhaar and cannot be edited by employers.
  • Aadhaar-linked mobile number is mandatory for OTP and biometric authentication.
  • DigiLocker login is mandatory for accessing EPFO services on UMANG (as per 2025 security norms).
  • Aadhaar Face RD App must be installed to complete the authentication process.

Compliance & Onboarding Impact for StaffingGo HRMS

  • Employers must initiate PF onboarding only after FAT-based UAN generation is completed.
  • Employees must submit their e-UAN Card (PDF) to the employer for PF registration.
  • FAT ensures one employee = one UAN, preventing duplicates and data inconsistencies.

Operational Best Practices

  • All new joiners should be advised to complete UAN creation on Day 1 to avoid onboarding delays.
  • Employers must securely store e-UAN cards and complete PF registration within statutory timelines.
  • Employees must keep their Aadhaar-linked mobile number active for future EPFO services.
